System Engineer - Magnetic Metrology Systems

OVERVIEW:

MicroSense, LLC is a spin-off division of a well-established, multibillion dollar leader in the field of precision metrology tools and equipment. Part of this growth plan includes the addition of a system engineer for the VSM product line to join the existing team. The system engineer will be an integral contributor to the future growth of the company.

SUMMARY

Hands on individual contributor that supports and/or manages VSM (Vibrating Sample Magnetometer) engineering projects, cost reductions, continuous improvement programs, development of new system options and system testing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hands on individual contributor with the full responsibility of managing engineering projects of new system options, system improvement and cost reduction projects and continuing engineering.

Documents changes, new designs and creates and maintains bills of material.

Proposes and drives system improvement

Strives to learn all aspects of the VSM product line to become a system expert

Supports final test as needed

Provides customer technical support, system installations, including domestic and international travel at least 10-20% of the time.

Trains distributors and representatives service engineers

Runs tests on customer samples and creates test reports.

Supports sales activities as needed.

Learns about Company’s business as appropriate; show up to work on time and attend work as scheduled.

All other duties as requested by supervisor or department head.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong technical/engineering skills with experience with complicated scientific instruments

Ability to quickly ‘get things done’

Self-starter requiring minimal supervision

Strong coordination, organization and communication abilities (both verbal and written)

Works well independently and in a group setting

Ability to work under pressure and time constraints

Strong reasoning skills and problem analysis and problem solving skills.

Willingness to travel 10-20%, with focus in US, Europe, Japan, Asia and South America.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Proven track record of managing product development and improvement. Minimum bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics with a solid understanding of electrical systems and an ability to read electrical board level schematics. Minimum of 5 years of experience with complex technical systems.

Board level electronic design experience is a major plus.

Experience with high sensitivity scientific instruments, magnetism and/or material science and LabVIEW programming is a plus.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Strong English language skills. Ability to communicate with customers in the scientific community and translate their needs into requested system specifications and effectively present how our systems serve the presented requirements. Ability to analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers.

Ability to write procedures and manuals for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to customers, colleagues and management.

TECHNICAL AND MATHEMATICAL AND REASONING SKILLS:

Ability to understand, explain and meet technical specifications and compare them effectively with specifications offered by competitors or demanded by customers.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs etc.). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Ability to establish causal relationships.
